When the beauty pageants were in full form even in the 90’s no Indian ever dreamt of witnessing any girl of Indian origin to bag the title. But with the winning of the Miss World title by Aishwarya Rai in 1994 a new chapter began and made the proud Indians realize that India still has enough to display before the international arena. She is though one of the progenitors of the neo-concept of the Indian beauty she could not confine herself within the periphery of the beauty 101industry but slowly became a part and parcel of the tinsel town in Mumbai.

This green-blue-eyed beauty appeared in advertisements for many prestigious firms stealing the hearts of millions. In the film industry she made her debut in the Tamil laguage film of Mani Ratnam , Irvar with Mohanlal, the famous south Indian actor and played a dual role in the film. The film and her performance both were crtically acclaimed . Being plucky she was introduced to the Hindi movie world by Rahul Rawail’s film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, but the film failed in the box office.Althoguh she could manage to win the best debutant’s ward in the female category for the film.

But it were the next two films that made her foundation in the Bollywood industry stabel Her performance as Nandini in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) was highly acclaimed and her flawless looks, acting, and dancing in the film not only fascinated the audiences but also became the talk of the town. She was awarded with the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her radiant performance in the film. The another movie Taal (1999) became a huge commercially successful film establishing her as one of the pre-eminent ladies in Bollywood. This very film also earn for her a second Filmfare nomination in the same year.

Her following cinemas like the Devdas, item number in 'Bunty & Bubbly’ has mesmerized the Indian audience in general sending waves of rhythm across the nation. Her escalating fame has brought her to the international fore and has been signified as the embodiment of the ideal Indian beauty. It was due to her elegance in the film ‘Devdas’ that it earned a special screening at the year's (2002-2003) Cannes Film Festival and created history in the box-office records both in India and the United States. She adorned the seat of a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival being the first Indian actor. In addition she graced the covers of India Today and the prestigious TIME Magazine. The Time Magazine listed her once on their list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World Today".

On 20 April, 2007 she married the Bollywood celebrity Abhishek Bachchan, son of the first family of the Indian movie industry and the son of the actor duo, the legendary Amitabh Bacchan and Jaya Bhaduri, the veteran actress.
